What is Lagenlook?

I first encountered the term ‘lagenlook’ when I started looking for clothes that were comfortable, stylish and age appropriate. I kept coming across the term associated with some pretty interesting clothes, but, try as I might I couldn’t seem to track down a website for this ‘Lagenlook’ brand.

I now know that ‘Lagenlook’ doesn’t refer to a brand, but instead refers to a style of dress (similar to how the term ‘boho’ is used).

The word ‘lagenlook’ is actually German and simply means ‘layered look’ reflecting a key element of the style. The style typically features multiple layers of natural, textured fabrics in cut in simple geometric lines.

One of the main things I love about the look is its flexibility. Depending on the fabrics and elements you choose, the style can be anything from very casual, run-to-the-grocery-store appropriate all the way up to being suitable for formal occasions. Indeed, my mother has worn lagenlook outfits at the Nobel ceremony and when meeting royalty!

Another great feature of the style is that it’s typically very flattering/forgiving for those of us who are on the larger end of the scale. However, I will say that it does take some getting used to and it can be easy to go overboard and end up looking even larger than you are buried in too many layers.

In future posts I’ll be exploring in greater details the individual pieces that typically make up a lagenlook outfit and the main brands that make this type of clothing.
